THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! All of your essays are so well thought out and nuanced and this one in particular felt really needed in the time we’re living in. I’m really glad that you’ve brought more attention to an issue that has always bothered me. Amazing work as always 🫶🫶

I loved the piece of writing in the beginning! Really fantastic. reminds me of the quote from Nietzsche where he explains that to kill a butterfly is monsterous, but to squash a moth is an understanable everyday occurence.

I am a little underwhelmed by the ending, though. what is the call to action here, to simply be aware of the fact of the matter? I am not sure if that is enough, given that I think most people recognize its easier to be pretty than ugly and yet they still afford these leniencies to their betters.

thank you! while I do agree with you that the simple awareness is not enough, this post was more a reflection on the issue rather than a solution. I keep most of my posts open ended like this, which can then allow the reader to make their own conclusions. also while many people do recognize it, they often treat it lightly, and I was writing on some of the consequences to inform the reader that it is not in fact something that should be treated lightly.

honestly I think being aware of your own biases is the first and most important step, something that amu brought out quite clearly in the end. Catching yourself doing it - and then rewiring your thoughts to remember how easily pretty privelege influences us.

When I start to notice myself doing it too, I can immediately start to reverse it and remind myself that beauty doesn't determine worth, for myself or for others. it may not be a "call to action" but it's a good point nonetheless :)

agreed! recognizing one's own biases is huge, and one of the hardest and first steps we have to make. re-reading my comment I realize I came off more critical towards the essay than I intended, because I do think it was well done, too. I was just thinking that if it had some sort of call to action at the end it would have made it more impactful is all.
